Just before the Easter break I had the pleasure of meeting one of the quirkiest names in hairdressing today - Charlie Le Mindu. Riding high on the success of his debut show at London Fashion Week, which involved a selection of extravagant and jaw-dropping wigs, Charlie was in high spirits as he talked about the many ventures he has coming up. Aside from being a trend-setting stylist, Charlie is also set to be the first hair editor of underground fashion magazine Super Super. After moving from France to Berlin to concentrate on hairdressing, he now lives in East London, where he has honed his skills even further. In Berlin Charlie created a totally new and fresh concept known as the Pop-up Salon. The idea basically saw Charlie style and cut people's hair in a club or bar (he was resident hairdresser at White Trash, RIO Club and Barbie Deinhoff's).
Charlie has now brought the concept to the UK - I first encountered his Pop-up Salon when he set up shop at the BUCK magazine launch party in Soho last year. Charlie has a very fresh approach to the 'hairy' world and a killer sense of humour. He talks about his love for wigs ."In the 60s people used to wear wigs all the time - everyday. Wigs are a more fun way to play with hair" he beams. Charlie also lets me in on the exciting news that in September he is setting to work to create a new collection of wigs. In our little corner of East London (we met at the Hoxton Bar and Grill) we had the chance to chat about the hairdressing world and the creativity Charlie feels is more prevelant in the UK. "I moved to London because I know that all the shoots, from all over the world, happen in London."
Charlie is bringing excitement, energy and inspiration to the British hairdressing world, and I think what he is doing is creative, daring and of course, very fashion-focused. Since he runs his salon primarly from his home in Shoreditch - where the fashion-conscious, edgy and painfully-trendy reside - he couldn't be in a better location. Now I just need to get myself an appointment!
