The King of the pop-up salon Charlie Le Mindu has returned to his roots and has taken over boutique/art gallery MACHINE-A for one month only, where he will be transforming the hair of the ultra-hip crowd who sway through the shop’s doors.
“For me, MACHINE-A is the coolest shop in London right now,” explains Le Mindu on the collaboration with the boutique with whom he has also designed an exclusive T-shirt and has created an installation for the store alongside super stylist Anna Trevelyan.
The pop-up salon is just one of the many projects Le Mindu is busying himself with alongside his regular appointments in his East London warehouse and at home visits.
“I style everyone’s hair, from the young to the old. In Shoreditch I mainly get young people but I do a lot of house visits to rich old ladies in Kensington. Doing their hair is my favourite, I tend to give them classic rollers with an edge. I get a lot of inspiration from them.”
He has also recently been travelling around Romania for inspiration for his latest London Fashion Week collection, where one of the greatest influences on the collection was the style of the Romanian gypsies. The rest of the collection he’s keeping under wraps, only hinting that it will be a lot more fun than last year’s.
Another secret project he is working on is the creation of a Disney princess for their latest movie and he has also been working on a collection with French artist, Jean Charles De Castelbajac, which will be displayed in Paris next year.
Famed for his avant-garde wigs and celebrity clients, including Lady Gaga and Peaches, Le Mindu revealed that his ideal client would be Cher. “She just has so many wigs!” he chuckles.
His work relationship with Lady Gaga began four years ago when they met each other in a pub. “We were both very drunk,” he recalls, “but got on so well that we began to work with each other.” When creating a style for her, like the famous blonde lips headpiece she wore, Le Mindu swaps sketches before beginning to make the design – the whole process can take anything from 2 months to 9 months.
