L’Oréal’s headquarters were packed out last night with some of the best-known names in the industry flocking to attend Terry Calvert’s Power Night. Using slide-shows, videos and catwalk models Calvert spoke us through the most famous looks of his career – all the way from the 70s to present day.
The enthralled audience hung on Calvert’s every word as he explained the inspiration behind each look whilst reminiscing over the past four decades.
Beginning in the 70s, a decade which transformed Calvert from novice stylist to salon owner, styles ranged from the ‘crazy colour’ trend to an extraordinary style in which Calvert gave the model jigsaw piece hair – a look created by sticking hair down onto triangle-shaped glass.
Taking the 70s look and giving it a modern day twist, he gave his first model a dyed tattoo on the side of her undercut, bright blonde hair.
The success of the Clipso group really grew in the 80s – a decade which compère Sean Dawson described as Calvert’s “golden age.” Greatly inspired by Vivienne Westwood, Calvert gave his models plenty of ringlets and curls – a look he is well known for.
After a spate of illness in the late 80s, Calvert burst back onto the scene in 1992 winning the L’Oréal Colour Trophy – which was, in his own words, his “proudest achievement.”
During a time, which Dawson described as ‘the birth of ‘the celebrity hairdresser’, Calvert showed the sold-out audience his best loved looks from the decade – including his favourite of all time, a model with extreme spiky hair screaming at a crab on her shoulder.
Entering into the noughties Calvert listed Lady GaGa as one of his inspirations as his models strutted down the catwalk with extreme, high padded hair festooned with lace, causing whoops of encouragement from the audience.
Ending the evening Calvert spoke of his honour at being made the new Fellowship president saying that for him “the fellowship will always come first.”
Before Calvert left the stage, Andrew Collinge, who was sitting in the audience, thanked Calvert voicing what the entire audience was thinking calling him an “inspiration” and a “true professional.”
