Don't have a Bad Hand Day!

Date Added: 2009-02-20

Bad Hand Day? Yes, thats the creative name that the Health and Safety Executive came up with several years ago to draw attention to the problem of dermatitis for salon workers. But its not all quirky names and imaginative campaigns - health and safety in the salon encompasses so many different things. It can be a simple accident, fire risks, dangers of new development and refurbishment, chemical spillage, repetitive strain industry and so much more.

Communications led by campaign posters, along with inspections and enforcement can encourage you the salon owner to take preventative action for things such as dermatitis by wearing the right gloves.  Glove manufacturers Marigold and BM Polyco Ltd teamed up with the health and beauty suppliers association to offer a discount voucher scheme which all formed part of the Bad Hand Day.

As the salon owner, you have responsibility for everything that happens in your salon. This means that you will be made accountable for any accidents that happen on your premises involving either your employees or members of the public.

Reducing potential mishaps, particularly with hazardous chemicals , is something that has to be avoided. The best way to do this is to ensure that treatments are only carried out by trained and qualified staff. It is vital to enquire about allergies or other medical problems and obtain their permission before treatment starts.

All staff should wear synthetic gloves made of vinyl or nitrile when washing hair or using chemical products. Slips, trips and falls are extremely common accidents in the hairdressing industry. Keeping your premises free from congestion and mess is the best way to avoid nasty accidents. Things like spillages should be cleaned and swept immediately.

Health and Safety is one of the most important things to remember when running a business. Reducing the health and safety risks that may arise in the course of your activities will not only lead to huge potential cost savings, but will also inspire the confidence of both staff and customers in your business. Make sure you don't have a bad hair day, a bad salon day or even a bad hand day!
