In homage to the iconic images of the 1940’s and 50's and inspired by Bettie Page, the Sassoon’s new mid-season academy collection was unveiled this weekend.
Entitled 'Le Baiser' and featuring geometric silhouettes, bow-shaped fringes and plenty of texture, the new collection, launched at the Mayfair Academy, offered a fantastic range of cuts and colours.
Mark Hayes, Creative Director of Sassoon said: “The inspiration for the collection was the idea of couture. It was good to see how the team interpreted 1940’s and 1950's looks.”
With the rise of what Mark describes as the so-called ‘thrift-store clothing’ styles and with plenty of retro looks on the catwalk, the idea of looking back to the past for inspiration was something that inspired the team.
Mark added: “The collection is a reaction to what’s going on in fashion”
At the launch event, the team, featuring Mark Hayes, Bruce Masefield and Edward Darley started off the presentation by creating three looks on stage, one short with a perm underneath (creating a 3D effect). The other featuring a bow fringe and masses of curls, and finally, the third look which displayed fantastic colour work, finished in 1950’s power blue and pink.
The second set of demonstrations showed off the colour work in more detail, with Faye, Caroline and Roxy working on looks that relied on a new technique created by the team know as the “Peak”. Demonstrating this, the girls created looks by placing blocks of unusual colour in triangular sections .
Speaking about the choice of shades Edward said: “Fushcia and tangerine was a look that was originally presented to us back in February by other members of the art team as it was inspired by Yves St Laurent’s favourite colours.”
More demonstrations were then presented by the artistic team featuring bow fringes, use of the peak colour techniques and a range of geometric cuts.
Finally, the show then presented the full collection, and a whole host of models descended on the stage. The first wave of models featured looks with bow-shaped fringes, graduation, box-bob shapes and rounded fringes. The second wave of models demonstrated creations that were inspired by the film “An American in Paris”. Finally, the last look featured a whole range of amazing colours, including powder blues, oyster blondes and greys.
With inspiring models and amazing looks, the launch not only showed off the fantastic cuts and colours in the collection, but also, was the perfect platform to experience the depth and breath of talent inherent to the Sassoon Creative Team.
