Power Night with Andrew Collinge

Date Added: 2009-05-20

Armed with years of experience and lots of fascinating anecdotes, Andrew Collinge kept the crowd entertained at the Fellowship’s power night on Monday.

Held at the L’Oréal Academy in Hammersmith, the evening kicked off with stories about Andrew’s time working at Michaeljohn and shampooing none other than Baroness Thatcher’s hair.

“She had to be up and out of there as fast as possible – she would even start drying her own hair”. He also talked about his time on TV show This Morning and at Autumn Kelly’s wedding to Peter Philips.

Twice British hairdresser of the Year, Andrew then took to the stage to demonstrate some of his speciality looks.

First he demonstrated work with long hair - Andrew created a selection of classic pleats, securing the hair in a ponytail and then rolling loosely round and held in place by a single pin.

The stage was then set for Andrew to create some shorter, funky styles. Two platinum blonde looks were created using a barrel curling technique.

Then, to show off the Avant Garde work he has done, Andrew demonstrated looks he created for the 2008 L’Oréal Colour Trophy Grand Final, which featured asymmetric shapes created with wigs.

Throughout the evening Andrew took the crowd on a trip down memory lane, reminiscing about his dad Peter Collinge, a well-known hairdresser who was president of the Fellowship in 1974. He also mentioned his strong respect and support for the team of stylists he employs.

“We have just opened a new training academy in Bold Street in Liverpool,” he said, as he introduced a team of stylists and colourist from his salons.

“We have a creative stylist award in-house. The first prize is entry into some of the big competitions”

Andrew’s enthusiasm and passion for the industry and his work proved a hit with the audience, who left feeling inspired and energised.
