Akin Konizi shares five tips for creating strong yet wearable cuts.
Published:When it comes to precision cutting, strength and softness should work hand in hand.
That’s what Akin Konizi believes. The British Hairdressing Awards Artistic Team of the Year leader and HOB Academy international creative director says truly great cutting is about balancing structure, movement and wearability for hair that’s both impactful and effortless.

For Konizi, every strong haircut starts with architecture rather than styling. Understanding head shape, bone structure and natural hair fall is essential to achieving balance and longevity within the cut, allowing the finished look to feel naturally refined rather than overworked.
“A strong haircut is built, not styled. Before you think about softness or finish, you need a solid internal structure.”

Konizi also stresses the importance of respecting the hair’s natural movement, texture and density during the cutting process.
“Strength doesn’t come from forcing the hair to do what you want it to do… It comes from working with what’s already there.”
By allowing natural growth patterns and texture to guide the cut, stylists can create looks that remain wearable and easy to maintain for clients between salon visits.
While precision cutting is often associated with rigid or severe shapes, Konizi believes accurate technique is actually what creates softness and control.
“Clean, accurate lines allow you to control weight and balance, which is what creates softness.”
Rather than relying on excessive texturising, Konizi says precision creates intentional movement and a more polished, sophisticated finish.
For a cut to feel modern and wearable, Konizi believes structure should always be softened with movement and fluidity.
Subtle graduation, invisible layering and softness around the face can all help prevent stronger shapes from appearing static while maintaining the integrity of the overall silhouette.
Finally, Konizi says a truly successful haircut should hold its shape without relying heavily on styling products or finishing techniques.
“If a haircut only looks good after heavy styling, it isn’t truly strong.”
By focusing on balance, structure and natural movement, stylists can create cuts that remain beautiful, effortless and wearable long after the client leaves the salon.
