Spending two weeks supporting the initiative in the Philippines.
Published:Rainbow Room International Artistic Director and Schwarzkopf Professional Ambassador Suzie McGill has returned from the Philippines after spending two weeks supporting the global Shaping Futures programme. A charitable initiative designed to equip disadvantaged young adults with the skills and confidence needed to build careers within the hairdressing industry.
The Schwarzkopf Professional-led programme provides hands-on education and vocational training for underprivileged young people aged 16-25, helping to create employment opportunities and long-term career pathways through hairdressing.
SKP’s Shaping Futures Returns to the Philippines as part of a six-week education programme in Lipa City. Suzie joined a team of international educators delivering practical training in cutting, colour and styling. During her placement, she worked alongside salon owner Kevin Kahan to help students develop foundational hairdressing skills, build confidence and prepare for future employment within the industry.
The programme is based at the SOS Children’s Village in Lipa City, which supports young people from communities across the Philippines. Throughout their stay, educators live alongside the students, creating an immersive learning environment that extends beyond the classroom.
Students taking part in the programme are supported through education, wellbeing initiatives and counselling services, helping them overcome personal challenges while developing valuable vocational skills. Many participants begin the programme with no previous hairdressing experience.
During the final weeks of training, students prepared for a large-scale showcase event attended by more than 300 guests. The production featured professional models, creative direction, make-up artists and stylists, providing participants with the opportunity to demonstrate the skills they had developed throughout the programme.
Alongside technical education, the team also focused on employability skills, helping students prepare for interviews and career opportunities within the hair industry. Several participants successfully secured employment following the programme.
“It has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. The talent, commitment and determination shown by these young people was incredible. To be able to share our skills and help create opportunities for their future has been truly inspiring,”

Suzie also praised fellow Schwarzkopf Professional Ambassador Armando Carluccio, who has dedicated significant time to supporting the programme in recent years.
“Armando’s commitment to Shaping Futures is extraordinary. The young people absolutely adore him, and his passion for education and giving back is inspiring to witness.”
Shaping Futures continues to demonstrate the transformative power of hairdressing education, using industry skills to create meaningful opportunities and positive change for young people around the world.
