Tips for Creating a Fully Inclusive Salon

By ROAR Hair & Beauty Owner Brian ‘Leo’ McCallum.

Published:
|

At ROAR Hair and Beauty, inclusivity isn’t just a buzzword, it’s a core value that shapes everything we do. As a salon group up for four prestigious awards, including the Scottish Hair and Beauty Awards (SHABA), we’re proud to be leading the way in creating a truly inclusive and welcoming environment for every client who walks through our doors.

This year’s recognition is a testament to the work we’ve put in. Still, it’s also a reminder that inclusivity is not a trend, it’s an ongoing commitment to breaking barriers and pushing the beauty industry forward.

Here are my top 5 tips for creating a truly inclusive salon where everyone feels seen, respected, and celebrated.

1. Ditching Gendered Pricing
One of the first actions we took at ROAR was to eliminate gender pricing. Our commitment to inclusivity extends to our pricing structure. Since day one, we have implemented gender-neutral pricing across all three of our salons. It never made sense to us that someone should pay more simply because of their gender. Instead, we decided to charge based on time, technique, and complexity, not gender identity.

This straightforward change has made a significant difference for our clients. The beauty industry should focus on skill and service, not outdated assumptions. Gender-neutral pricing ensures that everyone is charged fairly based on the level of work and expertise required for their haircut, colour, or style. Pricing should reflect the complexity of the service, not assumptions about the person sitting in the chair.
We have always been proud to lead in this area, and we will continue to do so.

2. Pronouns Matter
At ROAR, we have made a unified effort to ensure that pronouns are a fundamental part of our client interactions. By asking for pronouns during the booking process, we are making a small but impactful change that significantly enhances how welcome a client feels. This practice demonstrates our respect for individuals and fosters a more inclusive environment from the moment someone reaches out to schedule an appointment.

It’s straightforward, simply ask your clients for their pronouns when they book and train your team to use them correctly. This approach can greatly contribute to creating an atmosphere where clients feel acknowledged and valued for who they truly are.

3. Support the LGBTQ+ Community
True inclusivity doesn’t just happen within the salon; it extends beyond our doors. That’s why we actively support LGBTQ+ organisations and partner with groups who are doing the work to promote equality and visibility.

Being inclusive isn’t just about what we do inside our salon, it’s about how we use our platform to support the community at large. Whether it’s through fundraising, advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, or offering discounted services for those transitioning, we’re committed to making a difference.
It’s about walking the talk and using our platform to advocate for positive change.

4. Work with Influencers Who Share Your Values
In today’s world, social media plays a huge role in shaping perceptions and building communities. That’s why, at ROAR, we make sure to collaborate with influencers and content creators who share our values. Working with individuals who champion inclusivity and diversity helps us reach a wider audience and allows us to continue promoting self-expression in the beauty industry.

By aligning ourselves with influencers who genuinely support LGBTQ rights and inclusivity, we ensure that our message is consistent and impactful. These partnerships help to amplify our commitment to creating a safe space where everyone is welcome and can express their identity authentically.

5. Create a Safe and Supportive Environment for EVERYONE
An inclusive salon goes beyond just the physical space, it’s about creating an environment where everyone feels safe and supported. For us, this means being proactive about the language we use, the way we interact with clients, and the way we train our staff.

ROAR is not just a salon; it’s a space where self-expression is celebrated, and people can come as they are. We’ve ensured that our staff is trained in gender-affirming services and educated on how to make clients from all walks of life feel comfortable and respected.

A supportive environment means respecting people’s identity, understanding their needs, and offering a service that’s aligned with their expression.

At ROAR Hair and Beauty, we celebrate diversity and inclusion every day. We are more than just a salon; we are a community that embraces individuality, supports self-expression, and believes in the transformative power of feeling truly seen and accepted.

The networking event was filled with the very latest haircare trends, techniques and launches, and a session with AI futurist, Richard van Hooijdonk. It also honored the winners of the International TrendVision Awards from 2023 and 2024 and culminated with the Make it You show, named after the new campaign, featuring amazing hair creations from Global Ambassadors Nikki Lee, Romeu Felipe, and James Earnshaw.

Spotlighting some of the best creative talent from around the globe, Destination 2025 proved that when professionals come together, they don’t just grow—they rise.

2025 Beard & Facial Hair Trends

Mens Hair Educator and owner of TONI&GUY Billericay, Jim Shaw shares his tips.

Published:
|

From updated classics to bold new interpretations, Spring/Summer 2025 is all about embracing individuality and expressing personality through facial hair. Here, I’ve rounded up my top picks for the most exciting men’s beard trends to keep an eye on for the upcoming season.

Five O’clock Shadow

This timeless look is a classic and lives up to it’s name, a short beard referring to growing back in a day. This is one of the only beard styles that suits just about everyone! Sported by celebrities such as David Beckham and Robert Pattison, this looks requires perfect timing to get it looking just right.

Corporate Beard

This is a beard style we have saw increasing in popularity towards the end of 2024 and we know will be a huge hit for 2025. The corporate beard is perfect for anyone wanting to make a statement. The style is very angular and exudes authority and power, with the beard being balanced on each side of the face to avoid any hairs being out of place.

Ducktail Beard

The ducktail beard is a v-shaped beard, wider at the chin and narrower at the sides. The style dates back to the 50’s and is the perfect blend of undone and polished. This classic style makes a statement and suits a number of different face shapes. This style is very versatile and is super easy to upkeep making it an amazing look for 2025.

Classic Full Beard

A beard trend that will never go out of style, this is a symbol of masculinity and confidence. This look is dense and long all over with an extremely easy upkeep. The full beard can be difficult to achieve for many, however, for those who can, a stylist is your best friend for the upkeep. This looks exudes masculinity and is great for making a statement.

SB Awards

History of SB Awards

Launched in 2013, SB Awards have growing history as well as an exciting future

Published:
|

Since its launch in 2013, the SB Awards has grown into one of the most respected accolades in the professional hair and salon industry, recognising not just creativity, but the strength, resilience and business excellence that sit behind truly successful salons.

As SB Awards founder Jo Charlton explains:

“From day one, the goal was to recognise the complete salon business, not just what happens behind the chair. The industry is built on passion and creativity, but it’s also built on resilience, leadership and smart business thinking. The SB Awards exist to celebrate all of that, and to inspire salons to keep evolving and striving for more.”

While many awards celebrate artistic achievement alone, the SB Awards were designed to reflect the full picture, rewarding salons that combine exceptional hairdressing with strong leadership, client experience, team culture and commercial success.

Over the years, the awards have evolved in step with the industry itself. Categories have adapted to reflect changing priorities, from sustainability and innovation to education and team development, ensuring the programme remains relevant in a fast-moving landscape. What hasn’t changed, however, is the commitment to credibility and rigour. The judging process has always been central to the awards’ reputation, bringing together respected industry figures and robust criteria to ensure that every win is truly earned.

At its heart, the SB Awards stands for progression. It champions those who push boundaries, invest in their people and continually raise standards, not just for their own businesses, but for the industry as a whole. Winning an SB Award is widely seen as a mark of excellence, but even entering has become a valuable exercise for many salons, offering a chance to reflect, refine and benchmark their business.

The introduction of initiatives such as the SB Awards Leaderboard has further reinforced this long-term vision, celebrating not just one-off success, but sustained achievement over time. It’s a reflection of how the awards continue to innovate while staying true to their founding purpose.

More than a decade on, the SB Awards remains a benchmark for excellence, celebrating the salons that are not only shaping trends, but defining the future of the industry.

Calico Hair Trend

Safy B Owner of Safy B’s Salon Shares Her Tips on Achieving the Trend.

Published:
|

Calico hair is a multi-coloured hair dye technique designed to mimic the natural patchwork of colours found in calico cats. Known for their mix of white, orange, black, and sometimes brown patches, the idea is to create that same beautiful, unique blend in the hair.

A post shared by はなつばもも (@hanatubamomo)

Safy B Owner of Safy B’s Salon shares her tips on achieving the trend.

Bespoke Consultations
When it comes to creating calico hair, it’s all about keeping it soft, patchy in the prettiest way, and customised to each person. I’d start with a good consultation with the client to pick out a dreamy palette, usually soft blondes, warm coppers, muted browns , whatever suits their skin tone and vibe best.

Best For
It suits an array of different skin tones, hair types and face shapes but it’s extra perfect for those with warmer skin tones as the warmer colours harmonise beautifully with this skin tone. It does however also help to brighten the appearance of those with cooler skin tones.

Pattern Sectioning
I would take into account if my client wanted a really soft, seamless blend of colour, or if they were feeling a bit more fancy and wanted something bolder, more like the 90s blocky highlight style that’s making a comeback with this look. It’s all about tailoring the technique to match their vibe!

After Processing
I’d use a toner or gloss to melt everything together, making sure the finish is super seamless but still shows off all the lovely dimensions.

“It’s such a dreamy, playful look, perfect for anyone wanting something creative but still really wearable!” – Safy B.

Inanch London: 20 Lessons We’ve Learnt in 20 Years of Business

Inanch and Business Partner Joe Emir Share Their Insights.

Published:
|

Inanch and Business Partner Joe Emir opened the salon in Portland Street in 2005, and it’s now a mecca for Celebrities and Clients looking for subtle, beautiful hair. Inanch is one of the country’s most respected Hair Extensionists, and was recently named Best Extensions Specialist and Best Extensions Salon.

Joe and Inanch look at the 20 lessons they have learnt in the last 20 years.

  1. Become an expert in your field. Being a specialist will help you stand out from a crowded market.
  2. Customer experience is everything. Great hair is important, but how clients feel when they walk out is just as important.
  3. Loyalty is built through trust. Whether it’s a celebrity, full-time mum or working professional, clients return to stylists who listen and make them feel valued.
  4. Handling complaints professionally is key. Addressing issues with empathy and simple solutions turns unhappy clients into loyal ones.
  5. Word-of-mouth is the best marketing. Happy clients bring in more business than any ad campaign ever could. They are literally your walking advert.
  6. Personalised service wins every time. Remembering a client’s birthday, favourite refreshment, or hair history makes all the difference.
  7. Raising prices is necessary. With inflation, rising costs and changes in the economy, charging appropriately for your services is essential to being successful.
  8. Invest time in introducing different revenue streams. Selling retail products, utilising the backwash or offering add-on services can make a big difference.
  9. Technology is a gamechanger. Booking apps, automated reminders, and digital marketing all make business more streamlined.
  10. Always recruit attitude over skills. Skills can be taught, but a great work ethic and positive energy are priceless.
  11. Ongoing training keeps team members engaged. Investing in training and development keeps the team motivated.
  12. Dealing with conflicts quickly is crucial. Small issues can escalate if they’re not addressed straight away which has an effect on team morale and the atmosphere in the salon.
  13. Look after your team. Without the right people your business can’t flourish, so create a supportive and respectful environment.
  14. Cashflow is king. Knowing your numbers and being financial aware is just as important are the quality of your haircuts and colours.
  15. Classic skills are timeless. Making sure you’re ahead of the trends is important, but mastering classic techniques is essential to longevity.
  16. Compliance is non-negotiable. Don’t fall foul of health and safety, employment law and tax regulations.
  17. Networking is invaluable. Learning from other businesses, entering awards and attending events keeps you and your business fresh.
  18. Being flexible is key to longevity. Keep one eye on your business plan but one eye on how the industry is evolving and adapt when you need to.
  19. Delegation is a must. Don’t get caught up with daily admin duties. This will hold you back in forward planning. Try to delegate to your team as much as possible.
  20. Equal standards for everyone. If you’re running a business with employed family or friends, make sure you treat everyone equally with no preferential treatments!

Rainbow Room International Brings Japanese Innovation to the Scottish Salon Floor

The salon group are incorporating key learnings and insights into the salon environment.

Published:
|

An inspiring educational trip to Japan in March 2025 was made possible by Laura Leigh Kerr, the Director of Howard Street Academy and the 2024 Educator of the Year for the prestigious Fellowship for British Hairdressing. She played a crucial role in securing the successful bid for the group to embark on this unique, once-in-a-lifetime trip to Japan.

RRI’s philosophy is based on the Japanese Values of ‘Kaizen’, which means continual improvement. The educational trip reinforced this philosophy by introducing new methods, such as precision cutting techniques, and innovative practices and rituals. Overall, it was a truly life-changing experience for all participants. Japan’s meticulous techniques, respectful client rituals, and deep appreciation for the hairdressing profession left a lasting impact that are being brought back to the salon floor.

“It gave us a completely new perspective. The calm, the focus, the discipline, it wasn’t all about technique. It was also very much about intent, and that is something we are incorporating back onto the salon floor here in Scotland,” – Laura Leigh.

Customer Service: Elevating The Client Experience into a more Mindful & Relaxing Journey

Clients at Rainbow Room International are already enjoying the benefits of a subtle yet significant change: adopting a slower, more relaxed pace that fosters a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere. This experience is a refreshing departure from the often busy and noisy salon environments commonly found in the UK.

“What we saw in Japan was just the most extraordinary commitment to the overall client experience, it was attentiveness right down to the smallest detail. It was peaceful, tranquil, with details such as reclining backwash chairs designed to help the client fully relax, and no part of the process was rushed. We want our clients to feel that same sense of care,” – Suzie McGill, director of Rainbow Room International Uddingston.

Training: A Slower Pace, with a Long-Game Approach and Focus on Long-Term Mastery

The Japanese approach emphasises mastering knowledge before technique, which in turn reinforces discipline and builds confidence among trainees. The Japanese model employs a slower, more structured approach to training. Stylists in Japan spend years mastering each step of their craft. It typically takes five years to become a fully qualified stylist, with the first two years focused solely on theory, and trainees do not even begin working with hair during this time. Instead, they learn the science behind hairdressing, the foundational skills, as well as health and safety protocols.

“In the UK, there is a tendency to fast-track training, Japan however highlighted that true mastery takes time. We are now focused on enhancing our training pathways to develop not only skills but also confidence and craftsmanship through a commitment to in-depth learning” – Laura Leigh.

Cutting-Edge Precision: Innovative Techniques Where Less is More

In Japan, there is a strong emphasis on technique in hairstyling, rather than relying on products or heat tools. This focus on technique extends to cutting, where precision is paramount, and razor-sharp tools are used. Every detail, from using a single pin to secure and shape a hairstyle, is carefully considered and executed.

“The team returned with a deeper appreciation for their craft and improved discipline in their technique. It was all about working with the hair, with every movement and detail being carefully considered,” – Riccardo Corvi, Director of Rainbow Room International Ayr.

With a team full of new ideas, inspiration, and motivation, Rainbow Room International continues to demonstrate that when education takes the lead, innovation is sure to follow.
