The British Hair Consortium (BHC) is urging hairdressers, barbers and beauty professionals to contact their local MPs in support of a reduced rate of VAT for the sector.

Long-Awaited Reform

The call follows the Government’s confirmation that different VAT rates can be applied to specific sectors, a move the BHC believes presents a significant opportunity to push for long-awaited tax reform.

Calling All…

The consortium is encouraging salon owners, freelancers, educators and apprentices to back the campaign by sending a template letter to their MP, highlighting the challenges faced by businesses operating under the current VAT system.

Protect Jobs

According to the BHC, a reduction in VAT would help protect jobs, support apprenticeship programmes, encourage investment in skills and training, and create a fairer operating environment across different business models.

Meaningful Reform

A spokesperson for the British Hair Consortium said: “The Government has acknowledged that different VAT rates can be applied to individual sectors, creating an opportunity for meaningful reform. We are encouraging everyone working in hairdressing, barbering and beauty to contact their MP and demonstrate the strength of support across the industry.

“By speaking with one voice, we can help build a more sustainable future for professional hair and beauty businesses.”
