GLOWWA shares its advice for creating a more informed and supportive approach this Hair Loss Awareness Month.
Published:Hair Loss Awareness Month provides an opportunity for salons to open up conversations around hair loss and give clients the confidence, support and guidance they need. GLOWWA shares its advice for creating a more informed and supportive approach behind the chair.
Hair loss can be a deeply personal experience, affecting confidence, identity and emotional wellbeing. While hairdressers are not medical professionals, they are often among the first people to notice a change in a client’s hair and may be the first person a client feels comfortable confiding in.
This Hair Loss Awareness Month, multi-award-winning hair wellness brand GLOWWA is encouraging salons to approach these conversations with greater knowledge and confidence.
Hair loss can have many different contributing factors, including menopause, postpartum shedding, stress, illness, nutritional deficiencies, traction alopecia and rapid weight loss, including among clients using GLP-1 medications. With no single hair-loss experience or one-size-fits-all response, GLOWWA believes salons can provide a safe space for clients to talk, offer appropriate hair-wellness advice and recommend a qualified trichologist when further support is required.

GLOWWA advocate and hair-loss specialist Krysia West says clients are increasingly informed about hair loss and are actively looking for answers.
“Clients are coming into the salon wanting to understand what’s happening, rather than simply looking for a styling solution,”
– Krysia.
This makes the consultation an important opportunity to listen before recommending a solution. Where possible, salons should allow additional time and privacy for sensitive conversations and focus on understanding how the client feels about the changes they have noticed.
“We’re not medical professionals, but we are often the first people clients confide in when they notice changes in their hair,” adds West. “That places us in a unique position to notice changes, offer support and guide them towards appropriate advice.”
For hairdressers who are unsure how to approach the subject, GLOWWA recommends keeping the conversation simple and open.
“When did you first become aware of the shedding or change in density?”
“Have there been any recent changes to your health, lifestyle, medication or stress levels?”
The advice is to ask without making assumptions. Hairdressers should avoid dismissive comments such as “It’s probably nothing”, while also avoiding unnecessarily alarming language.
Instead, listen carefully, remain within your professional remit and recommend further advice if a change is sudden, severe or unexplained.
Hair loss should not be viewed as an issue affecting women alone. While menopause and postpartum shedding are increasingly discussed, male clients can also feel uncomfortable talking about receding hairlines or reduced density.
Alan Beak, GLOWWA Men’s Ambassador, highlights the importance of looking beyond common hair-loss myths.
He explains that hair health can be influenced by a combination of genetics, DHT sensitivity, age, lifestyle and overall wellbeing, with more men becoming interested in the relationship between their hair and what is happening internally.
As clients increasingly connect hair health with nutrition and wider wellbeing, GLOWWA believes salons have an opportunity to provide informed support alongside professional services and homecare.
The brand’s GLOWWA Hair Food supplement combines vitamins, minerals and amino acids to support normal, healthy hair growth from within, with targeted formulations for women, men and those navigating menopause.
GLOWWA also offers GLOWWA Collagen, a clear powder designed to dissolve into cold drinks, and GLOWWA Collagen Creamer, which can be added to coffee, tea or matcha. Both contain bioactive collagen peptides and can be taken alongside Hair Food.
For GLOWWA, this inside-out approach is rooted in the brand’s origins. Founder Suzanne Cooper created the brand following her own experience of hair loss and her search for comprehensive nutritional support. The company has worked with salons from the beginning, providing education, products and resources to help professionals discuss hair health with their clients.
GLOWWA recommends that salons:
“Hair loss is never just about hair,” concludes Errol Douglas MBE, GLOWWA’s Global Brand Partner. “It can affect confidence, identity and emotional wellbeing, which is why listening is one of the most powerful things we can do as hairdressers.”
For GLOWWA, Hair Loss Awareness Month is an opportunity to start conversations that should continue throughout the year. By creating a salon environment where hair loss can be discussed openly and without judgement, hair professionals can help ensure clients feel supported and understand when it is appropriate to seek qualified advice.
GLOWWA also offers an approved Hair Nutrition course, enabling hairdressers to become GLOWWA Certified Stylists and develop their knowledge of inside-out hair health.
