Thinning hair can be a concern for many male clients, but the right styling techniques and product choices can help create the appearance of greater density.

Hairdresser Jim Shaw shares four tips for helping clients manage thinning hair, from choosing the right styling products to adapting their haircut.

Choose Matte Styling Products

Shaw recommends opting for matte products when working with thinning hair. Unlike shiny gels and pomades, which can reflect light onto the scalp and make sparse areas more noticeable, matte products absorb light to help create the appearance of a fuller head of hair.

A volumising matte product can also help swell the hair shaft, making individual strands appear thicker and fuller.

Blow-Dry for Added Volume

The way hair is dried can also make a difference to its appearance. Shaw advises lifting the hair away from the scalp while blow-drying to create additional volume.

Allowing hair to dry naturally can leave wet strands pulling downwards and sitting close to the scalp, making thinning areas more visible. Blow-drying encourages the strands to stand upright, creating the appearance of increased thickness. Finishing with the cool setting can help set the style and prevent it from falling flat.

Move Away from the Comb-Over

For clients experiencing thinning, Shaw recommends avoiding the traditional comb-over. Longer hair swept across a sparse area can create a noticeable contrast between denser and thinner sections, while movement can expose the scalp further.

Instead, he suggests shorter, textured styles such as a textured crop or crew cut. Removing excess weight allows the roots to stand up more naturally, helping to create volume without relying on large amounts of styling product.

Handle Thinning Hair Gently

As hair becomes thinner, individual strands can become weaker and finer, meaning rough handling can contribute to breakage.

Shaw advises clients to avoid aggressive brushing and rough towel-drying, which can create friction and cause strands to snap. Instead, hair should be gently patted dry with a towel to help preserve the length and density of the existing hair.

Shaw notes that thinning hair can be alarming for clients, but adapting the haircut, styling technique and product choice can help them make the most of the hair they have.
