Founded by Karen Thomson in 1991, the salon was created to offer clients across the north of Scotland a destination for both hair and beauty services under one roof. Today, KAM attracts clients from across the UK, many travelling long distances to visit the award-winning salon.
As demand grew, the business expanded in 2014, adding additional beauty treatment rooms, a spa, a dedicated hair and make-up bar, along with improved accessibility throughout the salon.
Karen credits much of the salon’s longevity to investing in its people. Alongside competitive salaries, commission and bonus opportunities, team members receive ongoing education, clear career progression and opportunities to work at industry events, photoshoots and educational seminars.
Regular team meetings also ensure staff have a voice in the way the business evolves, helping to create a positive working environment and consistently high standards of client care.
Over the past 35 years, KAM Hair & Body Spa has received numerous industry accolades, including Best Regional Salon (Scotland) at The Hair Awards, Best Fashion Salon at the Salon Business Awards, and Gold Awards for Best Hair Salon and Best Beauty Salon at the British Hair & Beauty Awards.
Karen has also earned individual recognition throughout her career, including Salon Business Curl Specialist and Scottish Hairdresser of the Year at the British Hairdressing Awards, reflecting both her creative work and business leadership.
More recently, the salon has joined the Aveda network as part of its continued sustainability journey, offering cruelty-free hair and beauty services. Karen also joined the Aveda Artistic Team in 2023, having previously spent many years as a Matrix Artist, presenting education across the UK and internationally, including at the Aveda Congress in Minneapolis in 2024.
Reflecting on the milestone, Karen said: “Reaching 35 years in business is something I’m incredibly proud of. None of it would have been possible without our loyal clients and the incredible team who have shared the journey.
“We’ve always believed in investing in people, embracing education and continually evolving, and that’s what has kept KAM moving forward. I’m excited to see what the next chapter brings.”
