KIKU Salon Creates a Zen-Inspired Luxury Experience

Designed to enhance the client experience through considered lighting, sensory details and technology.

Scottish salon KIKU has refined its approach to luxury hairdressing with a recent refurbishment designed to enhance the client experience through considered lighting, sensory details and technology. Co-founders Paul Ralph and Hiro Kudo explain how their philosophy of listening shapes every aspect of the salon.

Zen-Inspired Experience

From its signature fragrance to its reception-free arrival system, KIKU Salon has been designed to offer clients an experience centred on relaxation, comfort and personal attention.

The salon welcomes clients with the scent of Oribe Côte d’Azur, featuring notes of bergamot, Sicilian orange, jasmine and sandalwood. A low-key house music soundtrack provides the backdrop, contributing to an atmosphere that combines understated luxury with a contemporary edge.

For co-founders Ralph and Kudo, creating this environment goes beyond interior design. Every element has been considered to support the salon’s wider philosophy of attentive, personalised service.

A Salon Designed Around Listening

The name KIKU comes from the Japanese verb meaning ‘to listen’, reflecting the principle at the heart of the salon’s approach to client relationships.

Rather than creating a traditional reception area, the salon uses technology to streamline arrivals and maintain an open flow throughout the space.

Clients confirm their arrival using an iPad and enter their number into the system. Their stylist is then notified via a smartwatch, allowing clients to sit back and relax until their appointment begins.

Removing the reception desk also eliminates a physical division between the front of house and styling areas, helping create a more connected environment for clients and the salon team.

Thoughtful Design and Client Comfort

The recent refurbishment builds on KIKU’s original principles, with particular attention paid to the details that influence how clients experience their appointments.

Lighting was another important consideration. Although natural light is widely valued by hairdressers when working with colour, KIKU found that clients preferred a warmer light on their faces.

The refurbished salon therefore combines warmer facial lighting with natural light positioned above the stylist, balancing the needs of the professional with the comfort of the client.

A Considered Approach to Retail

The salon’s luxury positioning extends to its retail offering, with Oribe stocked throughout the space.

The brand’s shampoos, conditioners and styling products feature skincare-grade ingredients designed to repair, protect and enhance the hair. The range aligns with KIKU’s emphasis on understanding individual hair needs and providing a considered approach to haircare.

The brand’s relatively limited availability in northern Scotland, where Gleneagles Hotel is identified as another nearby purchasing location, also contributes to the salon’s exclusive positioning.

Creating a Lasting Salon Experience

For Ralph and Kudo, the aim has always been to create something more considered than a conventional salon environment.

“When we first opened, we didn’t want to create just another salon,” Ralph explains. “Our goal was to build something thoughtful and lasting, where listening genuinely guides everything we do.

“Our recent salon refurbishment echoes our original principles with an elevated experience that our clients can immerse themselves in. At KIKU, we’re curating a zen salon.”

The refurbishment reflects the founders’ belief that the client experience begins long before the stylist starts working on the hair. From the first impression on arrival to the lighting, music, seating and retail environment, each element contributes to the overall atmosphere.

For salon owners, KIKU offers an example of how thoughtful design and carefully selected technology can support a distinctive brand identity, while keeping client comfort and personal attention at the centre of the experience.
