Highlighting four key hair trends from natural movement and textured pixies to creative braids and sculpted afros.
Published:As the autumn/winter season approaches, hair trends for textured hair are placing greater emphasis on natural movement, hair health and styles that offer individuality without demanding excessive maintenance.
Chris Grimley has identified four key trends for the season, with low-tension styling and intentional shaping featuring strongly across the looks.
This season sees a move away from perfectly polished curls in favour of enhancing natural texture. Low-tension styling is being prioritised, with styles such as mini twists, wash-and-go curls and protective looks helping to reduce scalp stress and breakage.
Moisture is also key when working with natural movement. Grimley recommends using a sulphate-free cleanser and silicone-free conditioner to help maintain the hair’s moisture barrier, alongside ingredients such as shea butter and natural oils to help lock in hydration.
The textured pixie offers a lower-maintenance alternative to the traditional sleek pixie, celebrating natural coils and curl patterns while retaining a defined shape.
The cut is designed to add movement and volume to textured hair and can provide an easy daily styling routine. Regular trims every four to six weeks are recommended to maintain the shape.
For finishing, edges can be defined with an edge control gel, while a lightweight conditioner can help prevent dryness.
With the winter party season approaching, creative braiding provides an opportunity for clients to add personality to their looks.
From detailed stitch patterns to colourful knot-less braids, styles can be customised with accessories including beads and cuffs, while pops of colour can create an individual finish. The versatility makes creative braids suitable for both special occasions and everyday wear.
Short, sculpted afros are also expected to take centre stage this autumn/winter. These looks focus on natural volume and movement while creating a clean, intentional silhouette.
Rather than allowing the hair to grow without defined shape, intentional cutting and sculpting can be used to enhance facial features and showcase textured hair. Grimley also highlights the cultural influence behind the trend, combining heritage with structure and celebrating Afro hair.
Across the four trends, the focus is on celebrating textured hair in its natural state while combining healthy hair practices with considered shape, movement and personal expression.
