RUSH Artistic Team members Tina Mehmi and Kirsty Judge share their approach to creating a fluid, multi-tonal colour smudging technique.
Colour Smudging offers a more relaxed alternative to traditional blending techniques such as balayage and colour melting, allowing colourists greater creative freedom when creating seamless transitions between shades.
The technique often begins with a pre-lightened base, providing a blank canvas for the colourist to experiment with placement and create a more individual finish.
For this marbled look, the RUSH Artistic Team used a combination of blue, pink, mint and peach. The contrasting shades create an optical illusion of light and dark, giving the hair a sense of movement and depth. The aim was to create a finish that appeared slightly different as the model moved, with the colour changing depending on the angle.

According to Mehmi and Judge, sponges are an effective tool for recreating the marbled effect. Compared with hand-painting, which can result in the colour becoming over-saturated or appearing too precise, using a sponge allows for a more fluid application.
The technique also gives the colourist greater control over the amount of product being applied while helping to blend the different shades together.
The team notes that colour smudging works particularly well on shorter hair, where the pigment is more visible, especially on a lightened base.
For this look, the team opted for a platinum buzzcut to emphasise the marbling effect and create an edgy finish.
