Helping disadvantaged young adults build careers in hairdressing.
Published:Schwarzkopf Professional has continued its commitment to education and social impact through its global charity initiative, Shaping Futures, helping disadvantaged young adults build careers in hairdressing.
Since launching, the programme has supported more than 3,500 young people across 33 countries, providing vocational training designed to equip participants with the practical skills, confidence and experience needed to pursue employment in the hair industry.
Earlier this year, Shaping Futures returned to the Philippines, where a new group of students completed an intensive six-week training programme led by volunteer hairdressers from around the world. Combining hair theory with practical skills including cutting, styling, consultation and customer care, the course aims to create long-term career opportunities for participants.
Representing the UK were Schwarzkopf Professional ambassadors Suzie McGill and Kevin Kahan, who joined the international team of volunteers to mentor students throughout the programme.
Reflecting on the experience, Kevin Kahan said: “I’ve trained so many people throughout my career, and sometimes you think you’ve experienced everything. But volunteering with Shaping Futures was completely different.
These young adults have overcome so much, and knowing the skills you’re teaching could genuinely change the direction of their lives gives the experience a whole new meaning.
Kevin continues: “Every day, teaching these young people was an absolute joy, and they taught me so much too. I’ll never forget the experience and have thought about it every day since returning home. I’d love the opportunity to do it again.”
Delivered in partnership with SOS Children’s Villages, Shaping Futures provides structured vocational education for young adults facing social and economic disadvantage, many of whom have had limited access to formal training or employment.
The programme focuses not only on technical education but also on building confidence and employability, with many graduates going on to secure jobs that enable them to support themselves and their families. Volunteers self-fund their participation, donating both their time and expertise to help deliver the training.
Through Shaping Futures, Schwarzkopf Professional continues to use hairdressing as a catalyst for education, opportunity and lasting social change.
