Fox Tips are proving to be a striking way to refresh long hair with a bold colour statement. Inspired by the contrasting tail of a fox, the trend features warm roots and mid-lengths that melt into deep brown or black ends, creating a reverse ombré effect with plenty of impact.

“Fox Tips is a vibrant two-tone look where the ends of the hair are coloured a contrasting dark shade – black or deep brown for blondes, or rich copper and deep purple tones for darker hair,”
Lloyd Court, Seanhanna Salons Wimbledon.

Here, Lloyd shares his top tips for mastering the look in the salon.

Layer Before You Colour

The haircut plays a key role in the finished result. Creating layers before applying colour ensures the contrasting tips follow the natural movement of the hair, helping the effect look seamless and intentional. Understanding how the hair will fall when styled is essential before beginning the colour application.

Section With Precision

Careful sectioning is the foundation of a successful Fox Tips service. Taking the time to map out each section before applying colour provides greater control and ensures consistent placement throughout the hair.

Work With The Hair’s Natural Fall

Rather than repositioning the hair, apply colour where it naturally sits. Dampen each section with water, comb it through and allow it to fall into place before applying colour. This helps soften the blend while ensuring the placement remains accurate once the hair is dry and styled.

Keep Your Application Clean

When working with darker or highly pigmented shades, changing gloves between sections can help prevent colour transfer. Fresh gloves reduce the risk of unwanted marks or muddy tones, keeping the finished look crisp and defined.

Prioritise Seamless Blending

The success of Fox Tips lies in the blend between shades. Taking time to soften the transition prevents the contrasting ends from appearing too harsh or blocky, creating a polished finish that enhances the overall look.
