With much of England experiencing drought conditions, Enki Towels Managing Director Nilofer Aydinli shares practical ways salons can reduce water consumption and introduce more sustainable practices into their everyday routines.

The current environmental crisis highlights the importance of businesses considering how their everyday operations can help reduce pressure on natural resources. For salons, where water is essential to many aspects of the working day, making small changes to water usage can be a simple starting point.

According to Aydinli, there are several practical measures salons can introduce to help conserve water while also keeping a closer eye on their operating costs.

A tap on an outside wall leaks, wasting water.

Be More Conscious of Water Usage

One of the simplest ways salons can contribute is by becoming more mindful of their daily water consumption.

Making sure taps are completely turned off when they are not being used can help prevent unnecessary waste. Aydinli also recommends reporting even minor leaks, including those noticed around the backwash, as these can contribute to water wastage over time.

Salons can also look at their cleaning routines. Aydinli suggests only filling mop buckets to around the halfway point when carrying out daily salon cleaning, helping to avoid using more water than necessary.

Monitoring water usage can have a financial benefit too, allowing salon owners to keep a closer eye on water consumption and associated costs.

Consider Changes to Salon Laundry

Small operational changes can also help salons reduce the amount of water they use.

Aydinli suggests considering disposable towels as an alternative to reusable cotton towels. By reducing the amount of laundry required, salons can potentially cut the water, detergent and electricity associated with washing towels.

According to Aydinli, even a single box of disposable towels can help eliminate some of the water, detergent and electricity consumption associated with the towel-washing process.

Share Your Sustainability Efforts

Sustainability can also become a conversation within the wider salon community.

Aydinli encourages salons to discuss the drought crisis and share the measures they are taking through local community news pages and social media.

Sharing practical examples of water-saving initiatives can help raise awareness among clients and other local businesses, while also creating an opportunity to discover new ideas and approaches that could be introduced within the salon.

By communicating the steps being taken, even small businesses can encourage others to consider how they can reduce water consumption and respond to the wider environmental challenge.
