The early stages of an apprenticeship focus on mastering the fundamentals, from maintaining the salon and shampooing clients to practising cutting techniques on training heads. While these tasks may seem simple, they provide invaluable experience in customer service, teamwork and confidence-building.
As apprentices progress, they move on to supervised cutting, colouring and styling, while learning how to carry out effective consultations.
Understanding what a client wants is just as important as the technical ability to create it. Developing clear communication skills alongside practical expertise helps apprentices build lasting client relationships and prepares them for life behind the chair.
At Urban Hair & Beauty, Marlene says taking on apprentices is a long-term investment in both her business and the wider industry. Making room for apprentices is her way of investing in the future of hairdressing.

One of her recently qualified stylists reflected on the experience, saying they were proud of the journey from apprentice to graduate stylist and grateful for the friendships formed with fellow academy apprentices along the way.
