Aveda’s International Technical Capability Manager Joe Hill talks us through the key colour direction for autumn/winter.
Published:As the light changes during autumn, Aveda’s International Technical Capability Manager Joe Hill predicts a shift towards warmer, richer colour palettes inspired by the soft glow of golden hour. Rather than simply warming up blonde hair, the look focuses on using golden, mocha and sunlit tones across different base colours.
On brunette hair, Hill says golden reflects can create a glossy, dimensional finish, bringing warmth and richness to the colour while maintaining a polished look throughout the colder months.

Hill’s approach starts with a rich mocha chocolate global colour, followed by a seamless backwash balayage on damp hair. He uses Enlightener Powder Lightener with 20 Volume Crème Developer, lifting the hair by a few levels to reveal its natural underlying pigment and create the warmth needed for the finished look.
The hair is then glazed using Full Spectrum Demi-Permanent™ Vegan Treatment Hair Color, with Light Gold and Dark Gold tones used without a base. According to Hill, this intensifies the reflect and adds richness without creating an overly vibrant result.
He also highlights the conditioning benefits of Full Spectrum, which he says leaves hair up to five times shinier and three times smoother, helping to enhance the glossy finish.
Aveda One For All Multi-Benefit Leave-In Treatment Elixir, a leave-in treatment with 25 plant-powered benefits designed to protect and finish the hair while adding shine, softness and movement between washes.
For Hill, Golden Hour represents a way of incorporating warmth into colour beyond the summer months, creating a healthy, sunlit effect that can be tailored to individual clients.
“Golden Hour Hair isn’t just a trend to me, it’s a way of making warmth feel wanted again, whatever the season,”
– Hill.
