Hair artist Chris Grimley has created ‘Future Ancestry’, a collection that explores Afro-textured hair, ancestral adornment and cultural identity through sculptural styling and contemporary fashion.
Drawing on the relationship between heritage, craftsmanship and self-expression, Future Ancestry imagines how the crowns and adornments of previous generations could evolve in the future, while remaining connected to their origins.
The collection takes inspiration from ancestral adornment, ceremonial beauty and contemporary fashion, positioning textured hair as both a form of heritage and an art form. Sculptural braids form the centrepiece of the collection, creating dramatic silhouettes that reference monuments and lineage.
Architectural shapes and gilded details further develop the theme, drawing on historic symbols associated with royalty, prosperity and cultural pride.
Each look explores the versatility of Afro-textured hair through a modern perspective, balancing strength with elegance and tradition with innovation.
The collection uses sculptural forms and intricate detailing to create hair that feels both powerful and considered, while maintaining a strong connection to the cultural references that inspired the work.
Rather than looking solely to the past, Future Ancestry considers how elements of ancestral identity and craftsmanship can be carried forward and reinterpreted. The collection presents hair as a way of communicating identity, heritage and individuality.
At its heart, the collection is a celebration of legacy and the enduring significance of the crown, honouring previous generations while imagining how those traditions can continue to evolve.
