Published:Hairdresser and texture hair educator Anne Veck recently travelled to Uganda to deliver training to aspiring stylists as part of an education initiative in the village of Namataba.
During the visit, Veck worked with a group of five young women, sharing practical hairdressing skills while helping to establish the foundations of an ongoing education programme.
“These were the most enthusiastic young women I have ever met. Their hunger for knowledge and learning was a privilege to witness and be part of,”
– Anne.
The experience highlighted the need for continued training in the area, prompting Anne Veck to launch a fundraising campaign with the aim of raising £5,000. The funds will provide a locally based educator to deliver weekly hairdressing lessons at the village school for a year.
The school was founded by British philanthropist Helen Margaret Owen, who used her life savings to establish the facility and expand educational opportunities within the community.
Reflecting on the trip, Veck says the experience reinforced her belief in giving back through education.
“I had my scissors in hand and my soul on fire after teaching hairdressing to the next generation of stylists in Uganda. I never tire of seeing the potential for a craft to become a career.
“Hairdressing gave me my life in the UK. When I arrived without speaking English, it was the one skill that allowed me to build a future. Now I want to pass that opportunity on by helping create a career pathway for these young women.”
Veck also says that she learned from local hair professionals during the visit and hopes the initiative will continue to develop through collaboration and ongoing education.
