How to Prepare Clients’ Hair and Scalp for Winter

Salons can help clients adapt their haircare routines to protect against seasonal dryness, breakage and scalp concerns.

Cold temperatures and low humidity during the winter months can affect both the condition of the hair and scalp. MOOD Creative Director Tracey Ann Smith shares advice for helping clients maintain healthy-looking, strong hair throughout the season.

Focus on Hydration

Cold weather can reduce the hair’s elasticity, making it more fragile and susceptible to breakage. Smith recommends incorporating a hydrating treatment, such as MOOD Keratin Mask, into clients’ routines.

The mask should be applied after shampooing and left on for five to 10 minutes before rinsing. According to MOOD, the deeply nourishing formula penetrates the hair and helps close the cuticle, leaving hair softer and shinier.

Reduce Heat and Protect Against Breakage

Clients should also be advised to limit their use of hot styling tools during winter, as additional heat can contribute to hair damage.

Smith recommends ensuring hair is completely dry before clients head outside in cold weather, as wet hair is more susceptible to breakage. Regular trims are also advised to remove split ends before they travel further up the hair shaft and cause further breakage.

Don’t Overlook the Scalp

Winter conditions can affect the scalp as well as the hair. Moving between cold outdoor temperatures and warm indoor environments can contribute to scalp dryness, while friction from woollen hats may lead to an itchy or flaky scalp.

For clients experiencing these concerns, Smith recommends MOOD Derma Pre Shampoo, a charcoal-based detoxifying treatment that works as an exfoliating scalp scrub and is designed to help reduce flakiness.

Avoid Over-Washing

While a hydrating shampoo can help during the winter months, clients should avoid washing their hair excessively, as this can contribute to dryness and dullness.

Smith also advises against using water that is too hot, as this can strip the hair of its natural oils and contribute to dryness.

For salons, discussing seasonal changes as part of consultations provides an opportunity to explain why clients may notice differences in their hair and scalp during winter, while recommending products and changes to their homecare routines accordingly.
