From regular scalp scrubs to nutrition and hydration.
Published:As colder weather approaches, hair can become more susceptible to dryness and breakage. Alex Thaddeus, stylist and owner of Alex Thaddeus Hairdressing, has shared five tips for helping clients maintain healthy hair and scalp condition through the winter months.
Thaddeus recommends incorporating a scalp massage into the shampoo process. She says this can help stimulate blood circulation, distribute the hair’s natural oils and break down stubborn product build-up.
Regular massage can also help remove build-up that may contribute to scalp irritation and blocked follicles.
Rather than recommending a standard washing schedule to every client, Thaddeus advises taking individual hair and scalp needs into account.
Oil production, lifestyle, exercise and hair type can all influence how frequently hair needs to be washed. She cautions that over-washing can strip the scalp of its natural oils and affect hair condition, making personalised advice an important part of the salon consultation.
Thaddeus also recommends scalp scrubbing as part of a haircare routine, suggesting it can be carried out once or twice a week depending on product use.
The treatment is intended to remove excess product build-up and dead skin cells from the scalp.
According to Thaddeus, maintaining healthy hair and scalp also involves looking at nutrition and hydration.
She recommends a well-rounded diet containing healthy fatty acids, protein, iron, zinc and vitamins. She also highlights the importance of maintaining adequate B12 and iron levels and staying hydrated to help support scalp moisture.
Thaddeus advises clients to avoid keeping their hair damp for extended periods, particularly when it is tied closely to the scalp or wrapped in a bun.
She says prolonged dampness can contribute to scalp and hair problems, including hair breakage and moisture overload. As an alternative, clients can gently blow-dry the roots first or allow sufficient time for hair to air-dry completely before styling.
For salons, the advice also highlights the role of the consultation in maintaining hair and scalp health beyond the appointment, with individual washing routines, scalp care and everyday habits all forming part of the conversation with clients.
