How Salons Can Cut Costs during the Colder Months

Tips on reviewing everyday expenses and looking for simple ways to improve efficiency.

As salons move into the colder months, heating becomes an unavoidable business expense. However, there are other areas where small operational changes could help reduce costs while also supporting more sustainable salon practices.

Nilofer Aydinli, Managing Director at Enki Towels, shares several areas for salon owners to consider when reviewing their winter expenses.

Take Bookings Digital

Moving away from paper-based systems could be a straightforward way for salons to reduce ongoing costs. Online booking platforms can replace paper appointment books, while digital loyalty schemes and e-gift cards can reduce the need for printed materials. According to Enki Towels, these changes can help salons reduce paper waste and their carbon footprint while bringing more of their client administration online.

For salons already using online booking, reviewing how many paper-based processes remain could identify further opportunities to streamline administration.

Consider Alternatives to Cotton Towels

Towels can represent a range of hidden costs for salons, particularly when cotton towels are washed in-house. As well as the initial purchase cost, salon owners need to factor in water, electricity and detergent, alongside staff time spent washing and maintaining towels. Frequent washing can also wear down cotton towels, potentially affecting their feel and creating additional replacement costs.

Enki Towels recommends considering disposable alternatives as one way of reducing these associated costs. Enki towels are made from natural plant materials and are vegan and biodegradable, according to the company.

The brand says switching to disposable towels can reduce laundry-related expenses and staff time while providing an alternative designed with sustainability in mind.

Review Energy Efficiency

The colder months can also be a useful opportunity to assess where energy consumption could be reduced around the salon. Simple changes could include installing LED lighting or fitting eco showerheads at the backwash. Salon owners could also review the products being used during appointments to identify potential opportunities for more sustainable alternatives.

With salons often becoming particularly busy during the winter and Christmas period, the press release suggests that making smarter, more sustainable swaps could help reduce running costs while improving the salon’s environmental credentials.

For salon owners, the winter cost review doesn’t necessarily need to involve major changes. Looking at everyday expenses such as paper, laundry, water, electricity and product usage could highlight areas where relatively simple adjustments may help improve efficiency as the colder months get underway.
