Salons are notoriously hot places to be on a summer’s day so we spoke to some hairdressers on how they’re getting through it.
Published:Everyone is talking about the heatwave and while some professions can work from home, salon owners unfortunately don’t have that luxury. That’s why we’ve caught up with some salon owners to hear about the steps they’re taking to make it a little more manageable.
Adjusting Opening Hours
If possible, schedule services that take longer or involve heat during the coolest parts of the day.
“We’ve had to be quite flexible during the heatwave,” says Emma Simmons, owner of Salon 54. “We’ve been moving appointments around where we can, so a lot of our colour clients are coming in first thing in the morning while it’s cooler.”
The key is to be flexible with your clients. Not every one wants the same experience during hot weather. Giving people options can make appointments more comfortable while maintaining great customer service.
If somebody doesn’t fancy sitting through a blowdry in this heat and they’re happy to leave with their hair damp, we’re absolutely fine with that. It’s not something we’d normally offer, but when temperatures are this high, it’s about making people as comfortable as possible.” Emma
Air Conditioning
For salons able to install it, air conditioning can improve both the client experience and business performance.
“Air conditioning has been a bit of a lifesaver for us, to be honest,” says Lorenzo Colangelo, The Gallery.
“Years ago, we’d have clients cancelling because it was too hot, we’d have the windows open because of the heat, then we’d be battling the noise from the main road outside.
“Since investing in a proper air conditioning system, it’s made a world of difference.”
Do take the time to get the right installation for your salon as it is a costly investment.
“We’ve actually been through three different systems over the years, and we’ve finally got it nailed,” says Lorenzo.
“It’s a significant investment, especially when you’re servicing it every six months, but it provides both our heating and cooling and it’s absolutely worth it.”
If air conditioning isn’t an option, think creatively about improving airflow throughout the salon.
We’re in a Grade II listed building, so air conditioning isn’t an option for us. Instead, we’ve opened up all four doors, got the big front window open and brought in industrial-sized fans to keep the air moving. It actually works surprisingly well.” Emma
Small touches can also make a lasting impression during hot weather.
“The refreshments have had a summer makeover. The ice machine is working overtime and we’re serving iced coffees, cold drinks and coolers throughout the day. We’ve even swapped our usual coffee biscuits for mini ice lollies from the local shop down the road. Clients love it, and I think the shop owner is pretty pleased with the arrangement too because their ice lolly sales are booming!” says Emma.
A Summer Escape
Creating a cool, welcoming environment can become part of your salon’s identity as Lorenzo says:
Our clients know they can walk into a cool, comfortable salon, and during a heatwave that becomes part of the experience. A lot of our regulars describe it as a little oasis.”
A comfortable salon environment can encourage clients to keep their appointments too. “It definitely helps reduce cancellations, particularly from some of our older clients who are less keen to venture out in the heat,” adds Lorenzo.
Don’t Forget Your Team
Keeping staff comfortable is just as important as looking after clients. Regular breaks, plenty of water and fewer rushed appointments, will make for an easier heatwave for all!
