Discover how the Tales of the North candle collection offers salons a Christmas retail opportunity.

From the comforting scent of a Christmas candle to the atmosphere created by a thoughtful salon environment, small sensory details can help clients feel relaxed and welcome. The Tales of the North candle collection offers salons a seasonal retail opportunity that connects Christmas gifting with wellbeing, personal stories and the power of fragrance.

As more salons explore how to create a wellbeing-first experience, attention is increasingly turning to the details that make clients feel comfortable beyond the hairdressing chair. Lighting, music, personal interactions and even fragrance can contribute to an environment where people feel able to pause, relax and enjoy their time in the salon.

Northern Ireland entrepreneur Alastair Gourley launched Tales of the North in August 2026, bringing together five scented candles inspired by personal memories, meaningful places and original artwork. For salons looking to develop their retail offering ahead of Christmas, the collection provides an opportunity to introduce products that connect fragrance with emotion and seasonal wellbeing.

Creating a Wellbeing-First Salon Experience

In Salon Business, Brian ‘Leo’ McCallum, Creative Director of ROAR Hair & Beauty, has highlighted the importance of creating salon environments where both clients and team members feel valued, respected and comfortable being themselves.

While a wellbeing-first approach encompasses everything from salon culture to staff development, the physical environment also plays a part in shaping how clients experience their appointments.

A carefully considered atmosphere can help distinguish a salon visit from an everyday errand. For some clients, an appointment provides an opportunity to take a break from busy schedules, enjoy a conversation or simply spend time focusing on themselves.

Fragrance can contribute to this experience, creating associations with comfort, familiarity and particular moments in life. At Christmas, when familiar scents can evoke memories of home, family and festive traditions, candles offer a natural connection between salon retail and wellbeing.

For salon owners, this creates an opportunity to think about retail not simply as an additional revenue stream, but as a way to extend the experience clients enjoy in the salon into their own homes.

The Story Behind Tales of the North

The idea for Tales of the North began in 2025, when Gourley visited his childhood home in Northern Ireland. Discovering an old photograph of himself as a toddler prompted him to reflect on the people, places and experiences that had shaped his life.

Fragrance became the starting point for translating those memories into a collection.

“Fragrance has always been a point of reference for me,” says Gourley. “A familiar scent returns me to a place, a person or a moment I thought had passed.”

Over the following year, he developed and refined the fragrances alongside the collection’s visual identity and artwork. The result is what he describes as his ‘scent memory map’, connecting personal experiences with feelings and memories that others may recognise.

Artwork is central to the collection, with its art direction drawing inspiration from Cookstown artist George Gourley, whose work features within the range.

“I wanted the artwork to matter as much as the fragrance,” says Alastair. “When you look at each candle, I want the image to begin telling you something before you even light it.”

The combination of scent and imagery gives each candle its own identity, providing salon teams with a starting point for conversations with clients choosing a gift or looking for something for their own home.

Five Fragrances for Gifting and Relaxation

The collection comprises five candles, each inspired by a different mood, memory or setting.

~ Sperrin draws on the earthy, smoky character of the Sperrin Mountains, recalling peat, turf fields and the familiar warmth of home. Its nostalgic profile offers a connection to the landscape and traditions of Northern Ireland.

~ Fireside evokes glowing embers and burning dry wood, capturing the comfort of gathering around a fire. Its familiar, timeless character makes it particularly suited to the colder months.

~ Fjord Shore takes inspiration from northern waters, towering cliffs and open skies. Notes of sea salt and driftwood create a fresh, soothing character associated with the freedom and stillness of these landscapes.

~ For You centres on connection, comfort and hope. Paired with artwork expressing light and transition, the fragrance has been conceived as a thoughtful gift for someone special.

~ Christmas Time captures the anticipation and familiarity of the festive season. Notes of mulled wine, spiced orange and festive sweetness evoke memories of decorations, putting up the Christmas tree and welcoming the season into the home.

For salons preparing their Christmas retail displays, the collection offers several approaches to gifting, from nostalgic and comforting fragrances to a dedicated festive option.

Bringing Christmas Wellbeing into Salon Retail

Christmas can be one of the busiest periods of the year for salon teams, with increased appointment demand, gift shopping and social commitments. Creating moments of calm for clients and staff can therefore be an important consideration when planning the festive season.

A candle can be positioned as part of a broader conversation about taking time to unwind at home after a busy day. It also offers clients a relatively simple way to recreate a comforting atmosphere beyond their salon visit.

For salon owners, Tales of the North provides an alternative to more conventional beauty gifts, combining home fragrance with storytelling and original artwork. The collection’s different identities also give teams the opportunity to recommend products according to a client’s preferences or the person they are buying for.

The candles could sit alongside existing retail ranges as part of a Christmas gifting display, or be incorporated into seasonal gift recommendations for clients looking for something beyond haircare products.

As with any scented product, salons should also consider individual fragrance sensitivities and avoid assuming that every client will enjoy the same sensory environment.

Extending the Salon Experience Beyond the Chair

The Tales of the North collection reflects a wider opportunity for salons to consider how their retail choices connect with the experiences they want to create for clients.

A wellbeing-first salon is built through everyday decisions that help people feel supported and valued. Alongside a positive team culture and thoughtful client care, carefully selected retail products can provide another way to reinforce that identity.

For Christmas, when fragrance and familiar rituals often carry particular emotional significance, candles offer a way to connect salon retail with the comfort of home.

Tales of the North candles are priced at £24 each, with a weight of 150g. The collection’s first retail location is Penny Farthing in Cookstown, with the candles also available online.
