Owner and Director of TONI&GUY Billericay shares his advice.
Published:As summer temperatures rise, keeping your hair looking fresh can become a challenge. Heat, humidity and sweat can quickly undo even the most carefully styled look, while prolonged exposure to the sun can leave hair feeling dry and dehydrated.
According to hairdresser Jim Shaw, choosing the right styling and care products can help maintain your hairstyle while supporting healthier-looking, hydrated hair throughout a heatwave.

Here are his key product recommendations for keeping hair fresh when temperatures soar.
Matte clays are a great option for hot weather as they can absorb sweat and excess oil while providing a strong, non-greasy hold.
Unlike high-shine gels, which can become slick or greasy when mixed with sweat, a matte finish helps maintain a more natural, dry-looking appearance. Matte clays can also help tame and add texture to both short and longer hairstyles, making them a versatile choice for warmer weather.

For styles that need to stay in place throughout a hot day, a sweat-proof styling gel can help maintain hold while resisting humidity-induced frizz.
Unlike heavier pomades, these gels are designed to provide a lighter, non-greasy finish while helping prevent heat and perspiration from breaking down the style.
They can also be easily washed out with water, helping to remove accumulated sweat, salt and product residue from the scalp.
Humidity can quickly leave hair looking flat and limp, making sea salt sprays a useful addition to your summer styling routine.
The salt adds friction to the hair strands, helping to lift the roots and create lasting, effortless-looking volume. Unlike heavier gels and oil-based pomades, sea salt sprays offer a lighter, water-based alternative that leaves the hair feeling less greasy.
For a beach-inspired finish, Jim recommends applying three to six spritzes to towel-dried hair, concentrating primarily on the roots and mid-lengths.

A UV-protectant leave-in spray is another useful product to add to your summer haircare routine.
Strong sunlight can contribute to hair damage, while heat and humidity can leave the hair feeling dry, frizzy and difficult to manage. A lightweight leave-in mist can help protect the hair from UV exposure while maintaining moisture and smoothing fly-aways.
Many leave-in sprays can also provide additional protection for exposed areas of the scalp, making them particularly useful for anyone with thinning hair or areas where the scalp is more exposed to direct sunlight.
With the right combination of styling and protective products, you can help your hair stay fresh, manageable and hydrated… Even when temperatures are climbing.
