From big-screen nostalgia to the continued popularity of Rivals, 80s-inspired hair is having a serious moment. But while the era was known for extreme volume, perms and plenty of hairspray, today’s interpretation is far more wearable.

According to Hiro Kudo at KIKU Salon modern 80s hair is all about movement, softness and healthy-looking volume.

“The return of 80s hair is all about confidence. We’re seeing clients embrace bigger, fuller styles again, but with a more modern, luxurious finish. Think bounce, body and movement rather than stiff, over-styled hair,”
– Hiro Kudo.

The Cut Behind the Volume

For clients looking to achieve the look, the haircut is just as important as the styling.

“Long layers throughout the back of the hair help remove weight while creating movement and lift. This gives the hair a much lighter feel and creates the foundation for volume when styling,”
– Paul Ralph.

To maximise fullness, Paul recommends blow-drying with a large round brush, lifting the hair away from the roots and directing sections back and forth to create shape and body.

For those wanting a more defined finish, smaller curling tools can be used to create tighter curls before brushing them out for a softer, lived-in texture.

Modern Volume Without the Crunch

While crunchy, heavily lacquered hair was synonymous with the original 80s trend, Hiro Kudo believes today’s version is all about touchable texture.

“The key is not overloading the hair with product. A little goes a long way. Modern volumising products give you the same body and hold without sacrificing movement.”

Hiro recommends starting with a volumising shampoo and conditioner to create the ideal foundation before styling. Products that strengthen the hair while boosting fullness can help create longer-lasting volume without weighing the hair down.

Protecting Hair While Styling

With heat styling often essential for creating volume, Paul Ralph also stresses the importance of heat protection.

“It’s surprising how many people still skip heat protection. Repeated heat styling can weaken the hair structure and strip away moisture, so protecting the hair should always be part of the styling routine.”

To finish the look, Paul recommends applying a lightweight hair oil through the mid-lengths and ends to control frizz, enhance shine and maintain a healthy-looking finish.

As big hair continues its comeback, the modern take on 80s volume proves that more really can be more… As long as it’s soft, polished and wearable!
